An 20 Standing In Two Circles:
The Collected Works of Boyd Rice

The first defintive and comprehensive compendium of the works of BOYD RICE, one of the most provocative and controversial underground figures of the post-punk era. A pioneering noise musician and countercultural maven, from the late 1970s to the present Rice has worked in an array of capacities, playing the roles of: musician, performer, artist, photographer, essayist, interviewer, editor, occult researcher, filmmaker, actor, orator, deejay, gallery curator and tiki bar designer, among others. First coming to prominence as an avant-garde audio experimentalist (recording under the moniker NON), Rice was a seminal founder of the first wave of industrial music in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, through collaborations with Re/Search Publications, Rice further established his position in underground with recountings of his uproarious pranks and the promotion of “incredibly strange” cult films and “industrial” culture. Rice's influence on subculture was further exerted through his vanguard exhibition of found photographs and readymade thrift store art, as well as his adamant endorsements of outsider music, tiki culture and bygone pop culture in general. Rice is also notorious for his public associations with nefarious figures both infamous and obscure, including friendships and ideological collusions with the likes of cult leader Charles Manson and Church Of Satan founder Anton LaVey, among others. His work continues to profoundly affect the countercultural underground at large, inspiring and enraging in equal measure. STANDING IN TWO CIRCLES contains: Essays 1986–2007 / Lyrics 1988–2007 / Art & Photography (38 plates) STANDING IN TWO CIRCLES also includes an extensive biography of Boyd Rice from the 1970s to the present, by the book's editor, Brian M Clark.

An 20 True Norwegian Black Metal
By Peter Beste

"When we're on the road, all we watch is VBS, and our favorite series is Norwegian Black Metal." (Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters) Documentary photographer Peter Beste has spent the last five years working in the milieu of the Norwegian black metal scene. This scene, with its notorious events of murder, church arson, and self-mythology, is absolutely sealed to outsiders. The international black metal fan base is one of the most devoted, fanatical, and proprietary in the world. Beste's access and insight into this world is unprecedented and has yielded an amazing photographic journey, along with a very popular documentary series on VBS.tv, also available on YouTube. Beste, together with Johan Kugelberg, noted writer, editor, and collector of documentary photography, has brought the images into a hermeneutic narrative that makes for a compelling experience.

An 20 Jazz Funk Greats
(Throbbing Gristle)
By Drew Daniel

Previous writings about Throbbing Gristle have tended to dissolve into lurid half-truths about deviance on and offstage; their actual recordings, lyrics and images have received comparatively slim analysis. Yet their work informs a broad range of music which draws inspiration from TG's arcane, deliberately misleading example: not just 'industrial' music but also synth-pop, the lounge revival, the noise scene, techno, and the English esoteric underground - they can all trace their debts to Throbbing Gristle. Twenty Jazz Funk Greats (a deliberately 'inconsistent' album) explains why. Drew Daniel creates an exploded view of the album's multiple agendas: a series of close readings of each song, shot through with a sequence of thematic entries on key concepts, strategies, and contexts. (For example: noise, leisure, process, the abject, information, and repetition.) The book argues that on Twenty Jazz Funk Greats, Throbbing Gristle modelled a critically new and highly promiscuous way of relating to or inhabiting musical genre - where punk rock was passionate and direct, TG were arch and mysterious, perverse and cold.

An Incomplete History of the Art of the Funerary Violins
By Rohan Kriwaczek

During the Protestant revolution in Europe, a new kind of music emerged, one that ultimately sought to recognize the deceased and to individuate the sense of loss and grief. But the tradition was virtually wiped out by the Great Funerary Purges of the 1830s and 40s. Kriwaczek tells the fascinating story of this beautiful music, condemned by the Catholic Church for political as much as theological reasons, and of the mysterious Guild of Funerary Violinists that, yes, defends its secrets in our time. This is unquestionably one of the strangest books any publisher has ever risked publishing. Discussing the evolution of European culture, musical forms and society's changing attitudes to mortality and the emotional effects of music upon the soul, this is a dark and magical history.

Whores:
An Oral Biography of Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction
By Brendan Mullen

The first biography of Jane's Addiction who became Godfathers of the Alternative Nation, originated the Lollapalooza festival, and captured the spirit of Los Angeles at its most decadent. Jane's Addiction's 1988 breakthrough album, Nothing's Shocking, had a seismic impact on the music scene of the late 80s. With a bracing combination of metal, punk, and psychedelica, coupled with lead singer Perry Farrell's banshee-in-a-windtunnel vocals, the arrival of Jane's Addiction put what would soon be co-opted as"alternative" on the map. Rising from the depths of Venice Beach's junkie-surfer demonade, Jane's Addiction freely mixed the decadent with the innocent, and paved the way for the mainstream success of bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana. After Nothing's Shocking, Jane's Addiction released another classic album, Ritual de Lo Habitual (featuring the hit "Been Caught Stealing"), founded the Lollapalooza festival, and openly celebrated a bacchanalian lifestyle that blurred all lines of gender and sexuality. Drawn from original interviews with the band (including Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro), their friends, and musical colleagues, Whores will take readers through the early days of the band to their drug-addled breakup and eventual triumphant reunion with the 2003 release of their album Strays. Along the way, providing a candid, sometimes disturbing glimpse into the dynamic alternative rock scene of Los Angeles in the '80s and '90s.

CD: Addressing The Corperate Fascist State
Selected Performance Recordings 1996-2002
United Satanic Apache Front

The infamous performer and artist Rev. Steven Johnson Leyba has cursed his enemies and glorified his comrades. This CD is the first collection of his audio performance work with his group United Satanic Apache Front. The subtitle "Addressing The Corporate Fascist State: Selected Performance Recordings 1996-2002" not only gives you an idea of the time frame but the tone of the recordings. A politically outspoken, religiously defiant and thoroughly iconoclastic man, he has made friends with such diverse crowds as the Black Panther Party, Tom Of Finland Foundation, and H. R. Giger. He's made enemies with powerful individuals, both "sacred" and "secular". The liner notes explain the rhyme and reason behind the assaults, and each track listing includes a short descriptive. Including samples of some of his inflammatory artwork, inciting five printers to reject the cover on moral and ethical grounds.

CD: Heimliches Deutschland
By Waldteufel

NOW AVAILABLE! On "Heimliches Deutschland," or "Hidden Germany," clattering and distant singular snare drums evoke (and invoke) the eight-hoofed gallop of Odin's magical horse Sleipnir, whilst Annabel Lee's accordions, violins and violas confidently drone atonal notes right through catchy waltzes worthy of accompanying the Padstow 'Obby 'Oss at each May Day festival... an elusive and rare work that manages so successfully to both entertain and educate. Choosing Death:
The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore
By Albert Mudrian / Feral House

In 1986, it was unimaginable that death metal and grindcore music would ever impact popular culture. Yet this amalgam of hardcore punk and heavy metal would endure for years to come. Initially circulated through an underground tape-trading network by scraggly slackers, this new genre of music spread rapidly as bands rose from every corner of the globe. This exciting history, featuring an introduction by famed DJ John Peel, tells the two-decade-long history of these underground genres through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists, producers, and label owners — past and present — who propelled them. The book covers the scene in every dark detail, from its late '70s beginnings in the U.K.'s anarcho-punk scene, to the early '80s American version that featured unplayable — and to some, unlistenable — riffs, to legendary groups like Napalm Death and Godflesh, to the genre's alleged death and resurrection in the late 1990s.

Sound of the Beast:
The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal
By Ian Christe

This is both a fascinating survey and a passionate fan's account. Christe's cultural savvy, deadpan sense of humor, and deft use of interview material make for a sweeping story with Scorsese-like scope. Black Sabbath birthed the beast; Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motorhead spread the sound; and in the 80s and 90s, subgenres proliferated. The spectrum covered in Sound of the Beast stretches from Hollywood hair bands to thrash metal to Celtic Frost's and Voivod's experimentalism to Norwegian black metal, nu metal and more. No outfit receives more attention here than Metallica. Christe's detailed account of their rise from teenage metalheads to irritating cultural institution winds its way throughout the book. Metal's undying quest for more extreme sounds, its popularity despite a frequent lack of mainstream acceptance, and its durability are other key themes. In the era of The Osbournes, Sound of the Beast unearths metal's past and gets a blowjob from its future.
