Tantric Yoginis and Devis

Yoga originates from the word "yuj", meaning to unite or bind. A yogini is a female practitioner of yoga for the attainment of oneness with cosmic energy. The ancient yoga tradition of Tantra identifies Tantric Yoginis as forms of the goddess Kali, each one associated with a particular yogic technique (kriya), sacred sound (mantra) and mystic symbol (mudra). Indian temples such as those in Khajuraho and Belur, built as early as 900 AD, are devoted to her form as divine guardian, temple dancer, goddess (devi) and celestial consort. As portrayed on these journals, sculptures from these temples are both graceful and seductive, chiseled to display the traditional art of Indian dance. The journal is endowed with a satin ribbon marker and long-lasting memento pouch.

The Jali Walls

"Jali" means net or latticework in Hindustani (a Persian-Arabic script). In its architectural form, jali describes a perforated stone screen, usually with an ornamental pattern. Containing minute carved, delicate geometrical and floral designs, these perforated screens were an integral component of Mughal architecture. Constructed primarily using marble or sandstone, their form includes windows, railings, dividers and outer walls, which provided ventilation and screening from light, imbuing their surroundings with a calm, cool and airy environment. During the day, as sunlight streams through the jalis, the patterns form magical shadows and reflections that grace the adjacent floors and walls, entrancing and mystifying all who see them. Our Mohammed Begarha II journal cover portrays jali work from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Jali Walls journals have a memento accordion pouch at the back to keep all of those loose bits and pieces in one easy-to-access place. Painted Walls of Lamayuru Monastery

Spectacularly set on a steep mountain in the Himalayas and founded in the 10th century, Lamayuru monastery, is the oldest spiritual center of Ladakh in Northern India. Although mostly in ruins with only a few buildings remaining beside the main assembly hall (Dukhang), it is still unsurpassed in its sheer grandeur of woodcarvings, statues and frescoes. The Dukhang was redecorated in 1970 with paintings depicting guardian divinities, and symbolism varying from benign to wrathful to serene. The Tibetan Buddhist attitude to spiritual art is that it has an inherent power to help the viewer come to self-realization by inviting contemplation of those aspects of our being which usually remain hidden. This journal cover pays homage to the Tibetan love of exuberant decoration with the signature colors exquisitely embellished with gold.
